  • An AC-coupled power backup system is another form of a battery-based system. It can be used either in a grid-tie system with a battery backup application, or a completely off-grid system. Instead of using a battery charge controller with the solar array, these systems utilize standard grid-tie inverters that produce AC power (usually 240 VAC), which can be “sold” to the utility grid when the grid is connected or can be used by a separate battery-based inverter to charge a battery bank during a grid outage. However, AC-coupled systems are not designed to operate full time off-grid but are used for backup power for say 10 - 20 days of critical loads only. The installation of the AC coupling 3300 backup system starts with a backup load sub-panel installed and those circuits that are important to your family separated from the main breaker panel. (See Diagram Below) This sub-panel will need a two-pole breaker that connects the MicroInverter (Enphase) or central inverter powered solar panels to the sub-panel breaker box after passing through an AC high voltage relay which is included in your purchase. The ac input and output circuits of Magnum inverter/chargers can be connected in parallel with a home’s ac wiring in the main breaker box without damage to the any of the inverters.

Backup loads might include things like lighting, wall outlets (receptacles) that power appliances like a microwave, refrigerator or well pump. All Magnum MS4024PAE power systems supply split-phase 120 / 240 AC volt power for direct connection to your home 120 / 240 volt breaker panel or can be used off the grid. The power for this sub-panel breaker box is fed through the automatic transfer switch of the Magnum inverter (s) so that when the grid is up, excess electricity is exported back to the utility grid in the same fashion as a normal grid tied solar system. The Magnum inverter neither takes from, nor adds to this part of the operation. If the batteries are full, the Magnum inverter sits in a low consumption idle mode ready to wake up when the grid goes down. When there is a blackout or grid emergency, the Magnum inverter springs to life in less than a 60th of a second, shuts down the utility side of the connection to prevent back feeding, and the battery backup inverter (Magnum) then provides the utility grade electricity using the stored energy in the battery bank to power the homes (now) mini-grid allowing the solar system to continue operation. The MicroInverters (Enphase) or the central inverter reads the utility grade frequency of the Magnum inverter now pulling power from the battery bank as the grid is up and continue to generate AC electricity pushing it into the homes now mini-grid.

Off-grid during an emergency when your solar panels are producing electricity and your inverter (s) are pushing electricity is when our AC coupling 3300 backup system really starts to shine. During a utility power outage, non back up loads are terminated in the main service panel that are not connected to the system, and the utility grid is no longer present. As a result, any excess power that the loads connected to the system’s subpanel do not consume is pushed back through the ac output of the battery-based Magnum inverter and into the battery bank. What happens with this type of AC coupling when the batteries are full and the home is not consuming all the power the solar panels are generating off-grid? How does the system keep the battery bank from being overcharged? The power output of the MicroInverters (Enphase) needs to be regulated to match the needs of the battery bank, using the battery voltage to control the output of the MicroInverters.

This can be accomplished by either a diversion load which is an option we offer and is significantly more money, or more commonly sold by Blue Pacific Solar is the pre-wired, pre-programmed relay driver which is standard with our AC coupling 3300 backup system you see here. The diversion control based battery-management system utilizes a DC diversion controller to regulation excess AC electricity produced by the solar array once the batteries are full and the home is not drawing all the energy from the system. The diversion control sends the excess power to be consumed in a resistive load and dissipated in the form of heat generated. Though there is an argument in the solar design community about which is better, there is no argument that a diversion load system can cost 30% more than a relay driver which comes standard with the AC coupling 3300 backup system.

The relay controller/driver that is standard and part of our AC coupling 3300 backup system has four outputs that can be programmed to open or close based on battery voltage. As backup battery voltage rises, the MicroInverter circuits are staged to shut down. This allows the battery voltage to control the power from the MicroInverter (Enphase) circuits to be activated or deactivated, as needed.

As the DC voltage in the battery bank begins to fall, the relay controller/driver will activate the MicroInverters (Enphase) AC circuits to not only power your home, but also to recharge the battery bank through the Magnum inverter/charger. As the power from the MicroInverters (Enphase) exceeds the demand from the batteries, the battery voltage will rise and the relay driver will shut down the MicroInverter (Enphase) circuits. If the power from the solar arrays begins to fall, battery voltage will drop and the relay controller/driver will allow the MicroInverter (Enphase) circuits to be activated. The AC relay driver allows the solar panels to provide the maximum power that the battery based backup system can safely handle by adjusting power production of the solar panels as the battery voltage dictates. The AC coupling 6600 backup system works on the same principle and fashion with a central inverter such as SMA or Fronius inverter or other main stream UL listed inverters.

System Limitation - The maximum power rating of the solar energy source must be no greater than 90% of the continuous power rating of the Magnum inverter.

Order ships by freight which means dock to commercial dock (not residential) to any of the lower 48 states. If the customer does not specify a local commercial dock that is available, we will ship to the nearest terminal where themagnum energy shipment will be held for will call pick up by the customer. If you choose to have your order shipped to your residence, most orders require special handling for unloading and the pallet has to be transferred to a truck with a lift gate. In most cases, truck freight companies do NOT require their drivers to unload shipments. An additional "Residential" as well as a "Lift Gate" special handling fee will apply if the driver unloads the merchandise to the curb at your residence. The special handling fee is available at checkout. If you have selected this add on service, the shipping carrier will call and schedule delivery of your solar kit, (provided the weight and dimensions of the product fits the criteria for lift gate service). You can avoid the residential and lift gate fees by arranging a "Will Call" pickup at the closest freight company terminal. In that case, you will need a pickup truck, a copy of the bill of laden, and a photo ID. When you arrive at the freight company terminal, the freight company will load your order into the bed of the truck with their forklift. The most common pallet size = 65" X 44" (Height depends on Product). Be sure and check for hidden damage.

AC coupling 3300 uses the Magnum MS4024PAE to supply split-phase 120 / 240 AC volt power for direct connection to your home 120 / 240 volt breaker panel or can be used off the grid. Multiple Magnum MS4024PAE series inverters are connect in parallel through the Magnum router interface. One Magnum MS4024PAE inverter is designated as a master and is active continuously, while the remaining slave inverters are maintained in "idle mode" for low power consumption. As more energy is required, the slave inverters "wake up" progressively to meet the demand. The AC coupling 3300 with the Magnum inverter is perfect for on grid and off-grid applications because it greatly improves overall efficiency and keeps power consumption to a minimum.

Pre-wired and pre-tested for 120 / 240 VAC / 60Hz applications, Magnum MS4024PAE AC coupling 3300 have been specifically designed to combine all of the major components required for a high power home or off grid system. Magnum MS4024PAE power systems have all of the circuit breakers and controls right up front for convenience and easy code-compliance. Magnum MS4024PAE power systems includes a main DC disconnect circuit breaker to protect each inverter, inverter bypass breakers, and inverter input breakers as standard equipment.

Your Magnum MS4024PAE power system comes standard with the ME-RTR router controller (See Document Tab). The ME-RTR router is needed to interface with 2 or more Magnum MS4024PAE inverters, and also gives you advanced control and monitoring of the power system. The controller has user friendly buttons and knob that gives you an easy to read menu system. You do not need an additional remote control unit to operate the power system, but if you want remote monitoring and control capability, an optional remote control can be located up to 150' away from the power center (50' cable included) to provide Magnum MS4024PAE power center monitoring and limited control at a more convenient location. The Magnum ME-BMK battery monitor kit is included to supply easy to access information about your battery state of charge, voltage, real-time amps, etc. This is a quality built and certified NEC code compliant AC coupling 3300 power system that, because it is installed in a Magnum panel extends the inverter warranty to 5 years.
