The SolarEdge grid-tied system combines panel-level DC-DC power optimizers and monitoring with a specialized DC-AC string inverter to maximize the energy yield of a solar installation. Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) on each panel that mitigates partial string shading, panel mismatch, uneven soiling and aging variance losses. The system is designed to automatically maintain a fixed string voltage to ensure that the inverter always operates as efficiently as possible, regardless of string size, pre-engineered shading, or temperature. This allows flexible string length ranging from 8 to 25 panels and mitigates the performance impact of varying panel sizes, tilts or orientations. The installation is scalable and facilitates expansion or replacements because future modules do not need to match existing ones. Installing a SolarEdge system can reduce installation time and cost by decreasing the number of strings, DC disconnects and other balance of system parts.

SolarEdge Technologies provides electronics to that act similar to micro inverters at a panel level but uses a central inverter to maximize energy harvesting. The SolarEdge technology is unique in that it uses a system in which each solar panel is connected to a power optimizer which guarantees maximum power to be drawn from each panel throughout the day then feeds the energy that it generates through a central inverter on the wall to the utility grid. The SolarEdge solution provides some unique benefits with their system, such as increased energy product per panel, improved safety for the DIY installer, and panel level performance monitoring. The SolarEdge power optimizers are designed to function continuously for over 25 years without maintenance in outdoor conditions with extremely low failure rates. The SolarEdge inverter is designed, and warranted, for 12 years of operation.

In a SolarEdge system, a power optimizer (Powerbox) is mounted behind and connected to each panel. At least 8 panels power optimizer  must be used, so your system can start as small at 8 panels with wattages up to 350 watts each. The output of the power optimizer are wired in series “strings” just like a typical grid connected system, but strings can be made of 8 to 25 panels and several strings of different numbers of panels may be connected to the same SolarEdge inverter. This allows the homeowner to put as many solar panels on a roof that can fit in allowable space. Panels can be partially shaded and can even be on different planes of the roof. Different brands and wattage panels can be used in the same string, making it easy to add to an existing system later or to replace a failed or broken panel. When the panels with power optimizer are installed, the homeowner can safely handle the wiring because there is only one volt output per panel until they are connected to the inverter and the inverter is turned on. The installer will know if the wiring is correct by counting the panels and making sure there is one volt per panel in each string. This allows for the quantity in series and the polarity to be easily verified.

SolarEdge 3675 Watt Kit Grid-Tied Home Power System

The SolarEdge inverters sync with the grid at 240 VAC, and because the MPPT and voltage management is handled by the power optimizer, have built-in AC and DC Disconnects, weigh just 52 pounds, and are 97% efficient. The system also offers optional wireless inverter connectivity for simpler installation, free of Ethernet or RS485 cabling. ETL Listed to UL 1742 for the US and Canada. SolarEdge has a 25-year warranty for the power optimizer and 12-year warranty for the inverter, extendable to 20 years. Current residential solar systems are typically built from ten to 50 solar panels connected in a series-parallel connection. Several panels (typically 10 to 15) are connected in series, forming a string, to achieve a voltage high enough to enable efficient DC/AC inversion usually between 150V to 600V. More power can be added to the system by adding multiple strings in parallel.

Since the strings are connected in parallel, each string must have the same operating voltage. Thus, in order to efficiently produce power each string must match others in operating voltage. This generally includes matching in panel make and model, string length and orientation and shading conditions, to name a few parameters. The entire array is connected to a solar inverter which is responsible for harvesting the electrical power and inverting it to AC so it can be fed into the grid. If an array consists of two strings with differing operating voltage characteristics (e.g. panel model or panel orientation), two inverters will be needed.

The series connection in each string also poses problems that reduce the maximum power available for inversion. This stems from the fact that the same amount of current flows through all of the panels of each string, disabling individual panel power maximization. SolarEdge is different in that they introduce a distributed power harvesting architecture at the panel level, in that way, the SolarEdge system overcomes the limitations present in current PV systems. Instead of using a single power harvesting device, an inverter, for the entire array, SolarEdge divides power harvesting functions between two devices: solar panel integrated Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) units. These units optimize the energy output from each panel.

The SolarEdge inverter handles only DC to AC inversion, not high power MPPT, schemes. Further, because this inversion is handled at a fixed DC voltage, the inverter can be a simpler, more cost-effective device.
